I just finished reading Ian McEwan’s On Chesil Beach, noted on my 2007 Book List. He is such a master of writing–especially demonstrated in his command of flashbacks, something that usually gives writers great struggle.

I am a big fan of Ian McEwan’s books and I’m sure you will enjoy reading more of them. I loved On Chesil Beach too, and found it entrancing. I was disappointed by its length though – I didn’t see why it had to be a novella, and I wanted more of both characters and their lives following the hideous disappointment of that first night.

Yes I was disappointed at On Chesil Beach’s length–but it was so rich I think I would have overdosed if McEwan had gone on for more pages. I find novellas, in general, are hard for me to deal with–that in-between length is maddening for me as a reader! (I either want less or more often, more)!
