the end of a month

It has been a month since she was buried–and so ends sheloshim, the first month of grieving. The men in our house have shaved off their beards, a remarkable visual marker of this transition. After a month of not being allowed to cut their facial hair, and growing unkempt beards…they’ve appeared downstairs, each clean shaven, their faces re-emerging in lightened form.

I had anticipated a big shift today, after prayers and such, but now visualized, it is incredible.

  1. That is a very deliberate form of grieving- it really leaves me at a loss for words.

  2. May the dead rest in peace. Your prayers and candles and following the old, old traditions really do matter, for the dead as well as the living. Bless you and all of your family.
