Shanah tovah–Happy Rosh Hashanah, Happy Jewish New Year. Dip your apples and challah in honey, indulge in sweet treats. Everything, anything, to usher in a sweet new year.
In this household, we are more than happy to say goodbye to last year.
But saying goodbye to the year means remembering it. And that is painful too. The sudden stroke and my recovery makes us gasp and then sigh with relief. Then there is the sudden death of my mother-in-law. That still socks the wind out of our lungs. We lit a yarzheit candle, a jarring new ritual now, in memoriam. I shopped and gathered ingredients, remembering her throughout my preparation. For she was the one who taught me all of this, all of how to be a Jew, how to run a Jewish household.
We are looking forward to the next year, welcoming it with open arms. What will it bring?
