goin’ to AWP

I’m going to AWP in Manhattan next week–soooo excited. My first AWP, and a trip to New York City in one!

I’ve already gotten advice to not go to more than TWO panels a day, else I’ll be overwhelmed. I’ve gotten advice to definitely go to the bookfair!

Any other pieces of advice? Are you going? I hope to see you, too!

  1. I’m going to! I advise you to come to my panel! ๐Ÿ™‚
    It’s going to be FUNNNNNN.

  2. Not more than two panels a day? Eek. I’ve made a plan for myself that includes, um, four a day.

Oh and by that I mean I’ll be there and it’s my first AWP and I’m excited too! I even got a spouse pass for my husband.

Only weirdness is, the hotel is right across the street from my job so it might feel like a workday for a little while. And I’ll probably run into my coworkers during lunch…

My compromise to try not to overwhelm myself was to skip the night readings so I’ll be heading back downtown around 6:15. Not sure if that will help.

  3. Yikes. I just realized my Friday & Saturday plans include 5 panels a day. Thursday I picked 4 to save time for the bookfair.

    Overboard?

(Yes, I am obsessive and already picked the panels I want to go to.)

Oh, now I really wish I was going! A whole gaggle of people from my program are attending this year.

  5. Nova–you’re not the only one! I picked out the panels I want to go to, too! Not sure I’ll make it to all of them, but I’ve picked 4 panels on Thursday, then 3 on Friday and Saturday each. This is NOT including the keynote with John Irving!

You are sooo smart-you got a spouse pass! My hubby will be with me too, but no spouse pass for him.

heather: I wish you would go, too!!!!

Susan’s panel, btw is at 10am on Friday. ๐Ÿ™‚ check her out.

  6. When I was in my 2nd year of MFA, one of our teachers finagled it so that the college actually paid for us to go to AWP. It was sooo much fun and so stimulating and really gave me the sense of being part of something Bigger, this huuuuge community of writers.

Nova and Jade, if either of you want to crash during the day, Iโ€™m staying in the hotel across the street. I might need to escape for some down time in between panel-hopping.

As for going to two panels a day, how could anyone resist? Itโ€™s like going to Disneyland and saying, โ€œIโ€™m only going on two rides.โ€ Very ambitious.

  7. Susan–I may take you up on it–I’m staying at a hotel uptown! But then again, there’s always the bar at the Waldorf. ๐Ÿ™‚ Quiet, dark, wood panelled. It is so perfect. Hee.
